Step-by-step requirements, exam details, state-specific topics, study tips, and approved course providers for aspiring California real estate agents.
Always verify current requirements with the CA Dept. of Real Estate (DRE). Requirements change.
California requires 3 DRE-approved courses: Real Estate Principles (mandatory), Real Estate Practice (mandatory), and one elective (Legal Aspects of Real Estate, Finance, Appraisal, or Property Management).
Apply online through the eLicensing portal at dre.ca.gov. Submit proof of course completion and pay the $60 exam fee. DRE reviews applications and issues exam eligibility.
Once approved, schedule your exam at a PSI testing center. Score 105/150 to pass. Exams are available throughout California at multiple locations.
After passing, submit your salesperson license application with the $245 fee. Complete Live Scan fingerprinting at an approved location for the background check.
Your license is issued in "salesperson" status and must be affiliated with a DRE-licensed broker to practice. File the broker affiliation through the DRE eLicensing system.
In addition to the national real estate topics, the California state section tests these state-specific concepts. This is where most candidates lose points — study these thoroughly.
Verify that any course you enroll in is currently approved by the CA Dept. of Real Estate (DRE) before enrolling.
Once you pass your exam, the Albany Capital Region is one of the most stable and growing real estate markets in the Northeast. Connect with Agent Asad to learn about building a career here.
